Revisiting IBS: Perspectives for the New Millennium
Medical Association Communications
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic functional gastrointestinal disorder that affects millions of Americans. Care for patients with IBS often falls to the primary care physician. The pathophysiology of the disorder is still not entirely clear, and current treatment options are ineffective in many patients. At the 2000 American College of Gastroenterology's Annual Meeting, attendees convened for the presentations of three experts in the field, who outlined the latest research on the pathogenesis and treatment of this clinically challenging condition. This program was sponsored by the University of Kentucky through an unrestricted educational grant from Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corporation and Bristol-Myers Squibb Company.

Advances in Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Presented by HEALTH-E through an unrestricted educational grant from Glaxo Wellcome
Introduction
March 2000

Thank you all for tuning into the Advances in Irritable Bowel Syndrome lecture series. This series highlights the contributions of 15 leading scientists, clinicians and other educators. The series will focus on the pioneering contributions being made in this area and the advances that will impact the treatment of this disease in the 21st century. The intent of the program is to explore the latest distance learning technologies and modalities to connect physicians, scientists, nurses, pharmacists and the general public through the Internet.

Topics will include brain-gut interactions, clinical epidemiology of IBS, inflammation, pain, the peristaltic reflex, pediatric IBS, sleep alteration and new therapeutic approaches. A distinguished group of experts have been selected to present these and other topics of interest in the study of irritable bowel syndrome.

Lectures will be posted weekly until all 15 lectures are viewable. I invite you to review the lecture schedule page for the list of lectures and the week they will be added to the site.

As the main objective is continuing education over the Internet, the lecturers in Advances in Irritable Bowel Syndrome have been identified on the basis of: 1) their cutting edge research; 2) the impact their research will have on a chosen field of medicine; and 3) their communication skills.

The lectures include an opportunity to ask questions of the faculty for 15 days after the lecture becomes available. After the 15-day period the faculty will review the questions and the most common or pressing questions will be addressed. The questions and the answers will be posted on this site approximately 60 days after the lecture is made available. CME credit will be available for physicians who register for the lectures through our online application and complete the associated tests. We have designated each lecture in the series for 1.0 credit hour in Category 1 of the Physicians Recognition Award of the American Medical Association. The FCG Institute for Continuing Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to sponsor continuing medical education for physicians. This series also offers CPE credit for pharmacists who register through the online application and complete the associated tests. The FCG Institute for Continuing Education is approved by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education as a provider of continuing pharmaceutical education. CNE credit is available for nurses who register through the online application and complete the associated tests. Each lecture in the series (8) is designated for 1 contact hour by the Society for Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, Inc. (#00-065), which is accredited as an approver of continuing education in nursing by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

We hope you enjoy this series and find the content useful. We also encourage feedback, as your comments are valued and will be considered to further enhance the series.
